Figure and Motion: Self Portrait

self-portrait-final

Charcoal on Coldpress Strathmore Watercolor Paper, 22″ x 30″, 2016

With this self portrait, I wanted to express my personality to the viewer. I like to think of myself as happy and being able to make people laugh, hence the silly pose and the big smile. The image itself has interesting contrast with lighter shades in the top half of the picture and darker tones in the bottom. This, along with several leading lines, focuses the eye to the top of the image. The collar of the sweater and the shape of my hair diffuses this focus and leads the viewer trough the portrait in a figure eight pattern.
